DistrictCollector Adarsh Surabhi on Thursday held discussions with officials from the Electricity, Animal Husbandry, Mission Bhagiratha, Irrigation and Agriculture departments on the need for creating public awareness on judicious use of water resources, power supply, fodder availability and employment generation in the light of the El Niño effect.
He called for proactive plans to ensure no shortage of drinking water until July 2027; inform the public in advance about the conditions that may arise in the coming days. The collector inquired about the water levels in irrigation projects across the district, allocation of water for agricultural needs and the requirements for drinking water. He emphasised that any decisions regarding the release of water for agricultural purposes must be made only after obtaining approval from higher authorities; suggested to the Mission Bhagiratha officials to restore local water sources in rural areas, including old borewells and other resources.
Surabhi instructed them to promptly identify and repair any leaks in drinking water pipelines and to completely prevent wastage. Special awareness campaigns be implemented to educate the public on water conservation and its prudent usage.
Given that the availability of water for the upcoming Rabi is expected to be limited, he advised the public be informed about the status of available resources. They should be made aware of the declining groundwater levels, encouraging everyone to act responsibly in consumption. The collector noted the high power consumption in the district and urged a special focus on managing the supply. He instructed monitoring of supply based on the requirements reported by the Agriculture department, particularly in areas with high demand, and to ensure no power-cuts. Electricity be provided to farmers during scheduled times; they be informed the supply timings in advance.
Strict action should be taken on illegal electricity usage or unauthorised connections. He instructed the Animal Husbandry officials to continuously monitor availability of fodder for livestock; to utilise resources efficiently to prevent any shortage; to ensure its supply.
Surabhi directed officials to be vigilant regarding employment for rural population; asked the DRDA to prepare a village-wise list of potential works under the ‘VBG Ramji’ scheme in advance. Priority should be given to restoration of borewells, groundwater recharge projects, construction of soak pits and farm ponds.
The collector directed officials from all departments to remain prepared with proactive action plans to ensure that no difficulties arise regarding water, electricity, fodder and employment.
