TheForest department official have been conducting a month-long scientific survey to assess the wildlife population and document biodiversity in Bhadradri Kothagudem district, which is home to several rare and endangered species.

Began on August 20, the survey primarily covers the Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary, spread over 64,435 hectares, and focuses on wildlife habitats, species diversity and threats to animals.

A team of 10 research students from the Forest Research Institute has undertaken the field study in coordination with Forest department officials.

The district is home to rare species such as king cobras and pangolins, besides gaur, deer, sloth bears and other wildlife.

Forest officials said more than 200 crocodiles are estimated to be present in the Kinnerasani reservoir.

The survey assumes significance as pangolins, among the most trafficked mammals globally, are found in considerable numbers in Bhadradri Kothagudem and some neighbouring forest districts.

Officials said the study will help identify pangolin habitats and threats, including poaching and illegal wildlife trade, and assist in strengthening conservation measures.

The forests in the district are also facing threats from hunting, road accidents and attacks by stray dogs, officials said.

Recently, signs indicating the killing of a leopard by hunters were reportedly found in a forest area along the district’s border. Incidents involving the hunting of deer and other wild animals have also been reported from some areas.

The findings of the scientific survey will be compiled into a report, which will include recommendations for strengthening wildlife protection and conservation measures, officials said.

Meanwhile, the Forest Department is taking steps to improve the Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary as a suitable habitat for tigers, following an increase in tiger movements in the district in recent times.

District Forest Officer Siddharth Vikram Singh and Kinnerasani Wildlife Forest Division Officer Babu said efforts were under way to improve habitat conditions and strengthen protection measures. The officials said the survey findings would be reviewed after its completion and necessary measures would be taken to protect wildlife and their habitats.

Strict action would be taken against those involved in hunting and other illegal activities threatening wildlife, they added.
