Protestingthe killing of a school principal in neighbouring Nalgonda district and demanding stronger measures to ensure the safety of educators, private school managements and teachers took out a rally in the city on Friday.

The rally was organised by the Khammam district unit of the Telangana Recognised Private Schools Management Association (TRESMA) in protest against the murder of Roopa Reddy, principal of Nagarjuna Public School in Nalgonda district recently.

FEMA convenor Muvva Srinivasa Rao flagged off the rally participated by a large number of school management representatives and teachers. The participants condemned the killing and expressed concern over what they described as growing threats to teachers and educational institutions. They said teachers play a crucial role in shaping students and producing skilled human resources for various sectors of society, and that attacks on them could have serious implications for the education system. The school managements urged the Centre and the state government to formulate a concrete action plan to ensure the safety and security of teachers, principals and other staff working in educational institutions.

“If such incidents continue, teachers and school managements will find it increasingly difficult to continue in the profession,” the participants said, stressing the need for effective preventive measures and strict action against those attacking educators.

They also warned that continued insecurity in educational institutions could adversely affect the functioning of the education sector and called for a comprehensive mechanism to protect teachers and school managements.

Khammam TRESMA president Gurram Kantha Rao, secretary Naidu Venkateswara Rao and treasurer Yelishetti Nasaraiah were among those who participated in the rally.
