TheGreater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) 10-day special monsoon drive, being conducted from August 11 to 21 across the city, has intensified civic and sanitation activities, with teams filling over 900 potholes and cleaning around 800 catch pits across the city.
The intensive campaign covered 30 yards on the 10th day, with teams focusing on garbage removal, pothole repairs, desilting and measures to prevent mosquito breeding and the spread of monsoon-related illnesses.
On Friday, the GHMC filled 94 potholes and cleaned 106 catch pits, removed 40.5 metric tonnes (MT) of legacy municipal solid waste and 19.0 MT of construction and demolition waste. Another five MT of floating material and silt was cleared as part of monsoon preparedness.
As part of the drive the sanitation facilities were inspected, with eight public toilets checked and 58 commercial waste bins installed at shops to improve waste collection and prevent dumping on roadsides. The civic body also initiated five rainwater harvesting structures and surveyed four non-residential buildings.
With stagnant water and accumulated waste raising concerns over mosquitoes and monsoon-related diseases, GHMC stepped up awareness and preventive measures and conducted 249 health and veterinary awareness activities, besides pyrethrum spraying and measures related to stray-dog vaccination and shelter transfer.
As many as three Bulk Waste Generator (BWG) awareness meetings were conducted, while two new BWG registrations were taken up. IEC and training programmes were held in five schools, covering around 186 participants.
Further, GHMC lifted 20.8 MT of pruned tree branches and 7.7 MT of dry and green waste from 28 parks. In addition, 09 awareness camps were held for Self-Help Group women, involving 39 participants, while 296 Indiramma sarees were distributed.
GHMC officials said the special drive would focus on keeping roads, drains and public spaces clean and strengthening Hyderabad’s preparedness to deal with the continuing monsoon.
