Bloodgroup mismatch is no longer a barrier to kidney transplantation, declared Dr PS Vali, Senior Consultant Nephrologist at Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad.

Speaking on ABO-incompatible (ABOi) transplants, Dr Vali noted that nearly 30% of willing family donors were previously rejected due to blood group incompatibility.

Using pre-transplant antibody reduction and plasma exchange, patients can safely receive kidneys from mismatched family members, achieving success rates comparable to conventional transplants. Urging families not to reject donors prematurely, Dr Vali highlighted Yashoda Hospitals’ specialized infrastructure for complex transplants, HDF, and CRRT dialysis procedures.
