DistrictCollector P Raja Babu inspected the solid waste dumping yard at Guttikondavaripalem on the outskirts of Ongole on Friday.

Officers explained to the collector that waste has been dumped there for several years, and 2.56 lakh tons have accumulated so far. Of this, 1.76 lakh tonnes have already been processed. Officers explained that the refuse-derived fuel from the process goes to cement factories, inert material is used to fill low-lying areas, and bio-soil is used as manure. They also briefed the Collector on the progress of a new dry waste centre being built at the site.

Raja Babu directed officers to complete the waste processing at the earliest. He asked them to create awareness among people to segregate wet and dry waste at home. He also told them to explain the dangers of single-use plastic to the public.

Municipal Commissioner Venkatakarishnaiah, Public Health EE Srinivas Sanjay, Municipal Engineer Yesaiah, DEE Padmaja, Medical Officer Vaishnavi, and other officers were present.
