SriSai Bhaskar Hospitals has achieved a milestone in advanced healthcare by successfully performing Vijayawada’s first Robotic Total Hip Replacement (THR) using the MAKO Smart robotics system.

The procedure was performed on 74-year-old Shaik Sabjan Saheb of Penumaka in Amaravati mandal by Dr Boosireddy Narendra Reddy, Managing Director of Sai Bhaskar Hospitals and Senior Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon. The patient, who had been suffering from severe hip pain for several years and later became unable to walk after a fall, began walking on the second day after surgery and was discharged on the fourth day.

Describing the achievement as a landmark for the city, Dr Narendra Reddy said that while robotic knee replacement surgeries had been performed earlier, this was Vijayawada’s first robotic hip replacement surgery. He said the MAKO Smart Robotics platform uses a CT scan-based three-dimensional surgical plan to determine the ideal implant size and positioning, enabling highly accurate implant placement while allowing the surgeon complete control during the procedure.

According to Dr Narendra Reddy, robotic-assisted surgery minimises soft tissue damage, blood loss and postoperative pain, besides ensuring faster recovery and improved long-term outcomes. He said the technology is particularly beneficial for elderly patients and those with cardiac ailments, hypertension, obesity and other high-risk medical conditions.

Expressing gratitude, Shaik Sabjan Saheb said the surgery had relieved his pain and restored his ability to walk independently. Dr Narendra Reddy expressed confidence that robotic hip replacement would become the standard of care within the next five years. Dr Akarsh Kotagiri, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr Vinay Kumar, Dr Deepak, Consultant Anaesthesiologist, and members of the Sai Bhaskar Hospitals clinical team were present.
