Districtcollector CM Sai Kanth Varma urged the farmers to turn El Nino crisis and challenges into opportunities. He along with Irrigation Superintendent Engineer Venkataratnam addressed the media at the Collectorate on Thursday. He advised the farmers to shift towards nature farming and cultivate alternative crops instead of paddy and enrol in the crop insurance scheme. He said that anticipated reduction in rainfall due to El Nino calls for change in agricultural practices. He further said that nature farming helps to conserve soil fertility and reduces cultivation costs and enables the farmers to achieve long term sustainability. He urged the farmers not to depend on traditional paddy cultivation under low rainfall conditions. He urged the farmers to enrol in crop insurances to face adverse climatic conditions and added that crop insurance provides financial security against losses due to drought and other adverse climatic conditions. He said that the district administration will provide all the necessary cooperation and support to the farmers.
