Markapurdistrict police arrested a habitual thief involved in multiple chain-snatching cases and a shop theft, and recovered stolen property worth about Rs 10 lakh, Markapur DSP U Nagaraju announced on Friday.

At a press meet held at the Cumbum police station, DSP Nagaraju said the accused stole a gold chain from a sleeping woman in Papayapalli village in Bestavaripeta mandal. He also snatched gold chains from women sleeping under mosquito nets outside their homes in the villages of Pedda Ullagallu and Purimetla in Mundlamuru mandal. In another case, he stole cash from a locked shop at Naguluppalapadu mandal. The DSP said a team led by Cumbum circle inspector K Mallikarjuna and Bestavaripeta in-charge SI A Siva Krishna Reddy arrested the accused near Konapalli cross road on Thursday evening. The accused was identified as Gurunadham Brahmaiah, aged 24 years, a resident of Nallathummayapalli village of Annamaiah district. Police recovered 83 grams of gold ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh and Rs 30,000 in cash from him. Investigation revealed the accused has similar theft cases pending in Telangana state and Nellore district. The SP commended the police team for their work.
