A shepherd was injured after being struck by gun pellets allegedly fired by suspected poachers in a forest area near Nemalichenu village in Ramakuppam mandal of Chittoor district on Friday. The injured man, identified as 75-year-old Rajamanikyam, was grazing his flock in the forest when the incident took place.

According to preliminary information, a group of unidentified persons had reportedly entered the area for illegal hunting.

Officials said the suspects allegedly noticed movement in the bushes and, mistaking it for a wild animal, opened fire. The pellets hit Rajamanikyam on his shoulder and both arms, causing injuries. Farmers working in nearby fields rushed to his aid soon after hearing about the incident. They shifted him to a government hospital, where doctors treated him. Medical personnel said his condition was stable and that he was out of danger.

Police and forest department officials visited the spot and carried out an inspection. Preliminary findings indicate that the firing may have been connected to illegal hunting activities in the forest. Police have launched an investigation to identify the suspects involved in the incident. Forest officials are also examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged poaching attempt, and further inquiry is in progress.
