Aspart of its ongoing monsoon preparedness, the Hyderabad Disaster Response Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has completed an intensive desilting operation at the Aghapura Nala in Darussalam, removing 56 truckloads of silt and solid waste that had severely obstructed the flow of rainwater. The operation is to improve drainage and reduce the risk of flooding in several low-lying localities during the monsoon season.

The Aghapura Nala serves as a major storm water channel carrying runoff from Mehdipatnam, Vijayanagar Colony, AC Guards, Mallepally, and Nampally towards the Musi River. According to HYDRAA, over the years, the drain had become heavily clogged with silt and household waste, including discarded furniture, mattresses, pillows, bedsheets, plastic and other debris, leaving little space for floodwaters to pass.

Following public concern and viral images showing massive accumulations of waste near the Darussalam culvert, HYDRA launched an immediate week-long desilting drive. As heavy machinery could not be deployed due to the narrow width of the drain, personnel from HYDRAA MET and Disaster Response Force (DRF) manually removed the accumulated silt and waste.

The operation was carried out under the daily supervision of RFO Jayaprakash and SFO B Charan Kumar, who monitored the progress to ensure the drain was completely cleared. “The removed silt was promptly transported away instead of being left at the site, preventing re-entry into the drainage system,” said Jayaprakash.

Local residents and commuters have welcomed the transformation, noting that the restored waterway is now capable of carrying monsoon runoff more efficiently.
