StateLevel Cricket Tournament for the Blind, organised by Blind Cricket Association of Andhra Pradesh, began at Gollavani Gunta stadium in Tirupati on Thursday. TTD Board member Panabaka Lakshmi, Yadava Corporation Chairman G Narasimha Yadav and Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) Chairman A Ravi Naidu attended the inaugural programme. Speaking on the occasion, Ravi Naidu praised blind cricketers for representing India at international tournaments and bringing pride to the country. He said blind cricket had not received enough recognition in the past, but the State government is now giving special importance to the sport. The government has decided to honour blind cricketers on par with regular cricketers.

He also said the government plans to develop Tirupati as a major centre for para sports. Funds will be provided to improve stadium facilities, build additional infrastructure and create venues capable of hosting international-level competitions.

Steps are being taken to launch a special project worth around Rs 50 crore, with support from the Central government, to develop dedicated sports infrastructure for differently abled athletes.

A total of 118 players from eight men’s teams representing different parts of the State are participating in the four-day tournament, which will continue until July 12. Ravi Naidu expressed hope that the event would be successful and said such competitions help build confidence among differently abled athletes while bringing recognition to the state. Panabaka Lakshmi praised the determination and self-confidence of blind cricketers and wished them greater success in the future, expressing hope that they would continue to bring laurels to the country.
