Twelvefinal year students of GDC here were suspended for six months pending a police inquiry following allegations of ragging of first year BDS students at the college hostel. Government Dental College (GDC) principal Sarjeev Singh Yadav told mediapersons that the first year students informed orally on June 9 to the anti-ragging committee and submitted a complaint on June 11 that they were given instructions to “get alcohol, cigarettes, food” and do other personal work.

The first year students were also allegedly made to do “chair sit ups”, push ups and were abused. When some interns tried to intervene, they were threatened and an intern suffered injury in the eye when he was attacked by the final year students.

The college authorities intially counselled the students that they would have no other way except complaining to the police if the ragging continued.

The parents of the final year students were also called and informed about the matter.

Later, 12 students were suspended for six months and a complaint was made to the Sultan Bazar Police Station. The police inquiry is underway, Yadav said. Further action would be taken as per police report, he said.

The group of students who are now facing allegations had earlier broke CCTV cameras on December 31 during New Year celebrations, he said.

The principal said a ‘mentor-mentee’ mechanism has been put in place in the college and parents also need to visit the institution at regular interval to enquire about the progress of their children.

Police said the principal of the dental college complained that 12 final year students ragged their juniors and that a case was registered.
