CityMayor Kolagani Srinivas on Friday inaugurated a newly set-up Animal Birth Control Centre at Bommakal in the 6th Division, in a move aimed at tackling the growing stray dog issue while ensuring their welfare.

Speaking on this occasion, the Mayor said the Municipal Corporation is focusing on both public safety and humane treatment of animals through planned population control measures. Built at a cost of Rs 43 lakh, the centre is expected to help bring down dog bite incidents in the city.

Municipal Commissioner Praful Desai, Deputy Mayor Yadagiri Sunil Rao, and other public representatives were present on the occasion.

The centre currently has 20 pre-operative kennels and 18 post-operative kennels, with a total capacity of 38. It also includes an operation theatre equipped with modern surgical tools such as a shadowless lamp, electrocautery machine, surgical cables, and a vaccine refrigerator. Basic facilities like a kitchen have also been arranged to ensure smooth day-to-day functioning.

The Mayor asked officials to take up further expansion by adding 62 more kennels and building a compound wall around the premises. He underlined the need to step up sterilisation drives, especially in light of recent dog bite cases reported from the 41st and 43rd divisions.

He assured that all surgeries would be conducted strictly as per AWBI norms, without causing harm or distress to the animals. After the procedures, the dogs will be kept under observation for five days under the supervision of veterinary experts. Trained doctors, dog catchers, and staff have been engaged for the work.
