A high-level inspection and review meeting was conducted at the Jawahar Nagar dump yard on Friday, led by Member of Parliament Eatela Rajender, along with leaders from all parties, government officials, and representatives of Ramky Group.
The visit highlighted the severe environmental and health hazards posed by the accumulation of nearly 10,000 metric tonnes of waste at a single site.
Speaking to the media after the inspection, Rajender expressed grave concern, stating that such massive waste accumulation at one location is unprecedented in world history. He criticised the government’s agreement with Ramky Group, which had promised recycling and zero discharge but had failed to implement them. As a result, lakes within a 40-kilometre radius have been destroyed, groundwater has become toxic, and the health of lakhs of residents has been severely compromised.
Rajender pointed out alarming consequences: miscarriages among pregnant women, death of livestock, disruption of ecological balance, and the transformation of the area into an uninhabitable zone. He emphasised that conditions assuring zero pollution have been blatantly violated, leaving residents exposed to air, water, and noise pollution.
The MP revealed that he had already met the Chief Minister to discuss the issue, stressing that as a former representative of the area, the CM has full knowledge of the problem and now holds the responsibility to resolve it. Rajender urged the government to adopt global best practices and modern technology to provide relief to the people of Balaji Nagar and the surrounding areas.
During the inspection, Rajender, Commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy, and Ramky representatives reviewed the site and directed the preparation of a detailed report within three days. He assured that after receiving the report, he would meet the Chief Minister to push for a permanent solution. Plans include decentralising waste disposal across multiple sites to reduce pollution.
Rajender reiterated that the issue transcends politics, promising a lasting resolution with the Central government's support. He accused Ramky of failing to recycle even half of the daily waste, leading to groundwater contamination. He also criticised the company for allegedly using false reports and legal loopholes to evade accountability, despite ongoing protests by Joint Action Committees (JACs).
The inspection was attended by Commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy, MLA Mallareddy, DCC President Vajresh Yadav, IMC Chairman Bommallapelli Narasimha, Jawahar Nagar Mayor Mekala Kavya, and several local leaders, along with residents. Rajender reaffirmed his commitment to fighting for a permanent solution that ensures the health and safety of the people.
